Mebae in Midnight Blue - The 12th Anniversary Black Cat
Some black cats are mischievous. Some are elegant. Mebae (めばえ) seems perfectly happy to be both - particularly when her fur is actually deep midnight blue.
Made to celebrate the 12th anniversary of Azone Label Shop Akihabara's Radio Kaikan location, this special version of Colorful Dreamin' Mebae - A Gift from M.K. (Black Cat) brings a darker, jewel-toned look to Mary Knight's cat-inspired outfit.
A black cat with a blue secret
The most distinctive change is her straight Midnight Blue hair. At first glance it reads as a dark shade, but Azone describes how the blue becomes more noticeable when light catches it. Combined with Cosmo Blue eyes featuring metallic-style irises, the result is dramatic without losing Mebae's sweet expression.
It's a clever anniversary colour scheme. Rather than turning every piece of clothing brighter, the design uses dark blue, black and small contrasting accents to make the eyes and hair stand out. I think the effect is strongest in photographs where the hair catches light at an angle.
The Mary Knight wardrobe
A Gift from M.K. is built around outfits Mary Knight makes for her friends. For Mebae, the black-cat coordination includes a cat-ear headband, dress, cuffs, drawers, socks, shoes and a little pochette.
The cat accessories make the theme immediately recognisable, but they aren't the whole story. The outfit is also a miniature fashion piece, with detailed trim and a full silhouette that rewards a closer look.
Which Mebae is this?
It's important not to confuse the Akihabara 12th Anniversary edition with an earlier regular Black Cat release. This particular doll is product POD056-MKA and features the Midnight Blue hair variant.
Azone specifies a soft-vinyl head with a rooted-hair cap, inset 8 mm eyes and a PureNeemo Flection XS / Girl (White) body. Her approximate height is 21 cm.

If you photograph her, try soft side lighting rather than a perfectly flat front-facing light. The subtle blue in the hair is part of her charm, and she looks like the kind of cat who would appreciate a dramatic entrance.
